So Very Quotable

I like Mike  Flynn's books ... just as much as I enjoy reading his blog, which is not at all about his books (most of the time anyway). Here's a sample of why.
Quote of the Day:

"Isn't it great to live in a society where the penalty for lying to a congressman can be up to 30 years in jail, but the penalty for a congressman lying to you is another two years in office."
-- Peter Schmuck, Baltimore Sun sports writer, concerning the indictment of Roger Clemens

Bonus Quote of the Day:

“Any entity – no matter how many tentacles it has – has a soul.”
— Guy Consolmagno, one of the Vatican’s astronomers, on whether he would baptize an alien.

It's a Good Thing He Ain't Bush:

The Obama administration has urged a federal appeals court to allow the government, without a court warrant, to affix GPS devices on suspects' vehicles to track their every move.

  1. Okay, Guy Consolmagno delivers a funny line. I do wish that he was more nuanced in the comments I have read.

For one having a soul is not enough since plants and animals and even bacterium have souls. It is a rational soul that is capable of eternal life.

Second if he likes to read SF as he does than C.S. Lewis Space Trilogy is an interesting start on the question. Plus what if an alien race's equivalent of Adam and Eve never sinned? In that case Baptism would not be required. God could use us to bring salvation to an alien race via Baptism or intervened in another way with a different sacramental system. There are certainly other possibilities.

Though the idea of Baptizing aliens as in Eifelheim is an interesting idea.

  2. All very good points and I was recently looking for that trilogy free to put on my Kindle.

I will say though that with the media the way it is today we must be thankful for a decent sound byte. :-)
