Of course, the big surprise in this painting is not the subject matter, though I really love the piece. It is the artist. This is from Pablo Picasso's early years. My Daily Art Display has more information about Picasso during that time.
That's the thing about Picasso that separates him from his imitators: he could draw. So when he says that this image of a thousand little squares is a portrait of so-and-so, I'm more inclined to believe him.
I would have never guessed that was a Picasso.
