Worth a Thousand Words: Staircase Group

Staircase Group (Portrait of Raphaelle Peale and Titian Ramsay Peale I), 1795) Charles Willson Peale.
Via Books and Art
Peale painted this life size portrait to be a trompe l'oeil and fool the eye into thinking it was real. To that end, he installed the painting in his studio inside a door frame with a step in front of it. It must have fooled many people.

  1. Saw this last Sunday at the Philadelphia Museum of Art as I was waiting to vest for the papal mass. They have an actual step at the base of the frame to mimic a real staircase. Should have taken a photo.

  2. I have pictures of my experience of the papal Mass in NYC up at my blog, if you're interested Julie.
