Two men considering a religious vocation were having a conversation. "What is similar about the Jesuit and Dominican Orders? " the one asked.
The second replied, "Well, they were both founded by Spaniards -- St. Dominic for the Dominicans, and St. Ignatius of Loyola for the Jesuits. They were also both founded to combat heresy -- the Dominicans to fight the Albigensians, and the Jesuits to fight the Protestants."
"What is different about the Jesuit and Dominican Orders?"
"Met any Albigensians lately?"

A young man rushes into a pub where he knows that two local priests come to socialize; one is a dominican and one is a jesuit.
ReplyDeleteHe says, "Fathers, I need know how many Novenas I have to pray in order to get a Porsche?"
The Dominican said, "Well son, I think I can help you but first you need to tell me what a Porsche is."
The Jesuit said, "Oh son, that is an easy answer, just tell me what a Novena is though?"
It was a toss up between that one and the one I posted. Both are so good!
ReplyDeleteI pass these on to my Jesuit priest friend in Poland. Very funny!
ReplyDeleteI can't seem to find the original source, but I recall with a smile a quip from Fr. Neuhaus to the effect that the Catholic Church was of course very interested in ecumenical dialogue with non-Catholic groups like Protestants, Muslims, and Jesuits.
ReplyDeleteThat is hilarious! :-D
ReplyDeleteBeing educated by the Jesuits, I suppose I am a little defensive, but the original joke is wrong in its underlying premise. Ingnatius wanted to help himself, his friends (like Francis Xavier and Peter Favre), and everyone in the work save their souls. That was the only goal when the Society of Jesus was founded.
ReplyDeleteAs an aside, I note that Dominic named his order after himself and Ignatius named his order after his Lord.
Forgive the typos. What I meant to say was:

ReplyDeleteUmm, no. Holy Father Dominic named his order, "The Order of Preachers." His children called themselves Dominicans after him. (Just as Holy Father Francis named his order, "The Order of Friars Minor," while his spiritual children called themselves Franciscans after him.)
