During the preview the father is scattering the ashes of his son and it nearly made me want to vomit. I am still trying to articulate why this made me so upset and it was only a preview. Reading Lynne's comment reminded me that Piety is a gift of the Holy spirit so I will probably pass on this film.
This waiting in Joyful hope for Jesus final and full coming is fun with websites and blogs like yours Julie. It is not represented as a Catholic practice.

Also, the way it is handled is very reverent. It is one of the scenes which was so heart-felt and in which Sheen really acted (meaning other than the usual acting style I am used to seeing from him). Very effectively done and combined with another touch which I am deliberately not describing so that other viewers get the surprise that we did.Julie D.https://www.blogger.com/profile/08384291674560438678noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6881054.post-49700469728384006602011-09-10T08:32:45.548-05:002011-09-10T08:32:45.548-05:00What (or whose) ashes is he spreading? I was just saying they lost a good opportunity to use an integral element of the pilgrimage to make the story more complex, meaningful, and spiritual. The four people focused on made it quite clear that they wanted to focus on spirituality rather than giving us a Christian or Catholic (beyond the token priest who is spoken to occasionally). That is fine also. Their choice and a popular one these days ... sadly predictable.

As to the point about "speaking to all people" ... that is a rather simplistic argument that does not respect the intelligence of the movie-going audience. What if there were a Hindu, a Native American, etc. going on a faith journey? I bet that wouldn't be watered down to speak to everyone, especially if it had a tradition of over 1,000 years. If I were to watch a film about a Muslim father going on Hajj under similar circumstances I wouldn't feel excluded if he was a real Muslim rather than lapsed or "spiritual." I would be interested and would trust that his experience in his faith would carry over to me ... as indeed various other faith experiences have done in other movies I have seen.

A simple point but one that Hollywood and also earnest, indie filmmakers miss all too often.Julie D.https://www.blogger.com/profile/08384291674560438678noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6881054.post-75183707213769589402011-09-09T15:59:37.887-05:002011-09-09T15:59:37.887-05:00Hi Julie,

Emilio was down with a bad cold. Martin is a wonderful man and a practicing Catholic since the 1980's. He came back to the faith when he almost died filming in Southeast Asia. We discussed why the film was not overtly "Catholic" and they have some good reasons. They want it to speak to all people..spirituality rather than religiousity as Martin put it. I'll have a write up on the interview in the Dallas Advocate soon. (Due to an embargo from Maximus MG I can not review the movie until it opens...but my thumb is up right now. Thanks for all your support Julie!Dave Rosenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00028871737104088092noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6881054.post-81682919491969587412011-09-09T09:58:10.408-05:002011-09-09T09:58:10.408-05:00Sounds good, am reading a very nice book on walkin...Sounds good, am reading a very nice book on walking the Camino."To The Field of Stars" by Kevin A.
