I'm glad to see that Ebert was mostly opposed to abortion but once again we have the false idea of abortion to save the mother's life. Ending pregnancy for the sake of the mother's health is common in the last trimester. It's called inducing labor and is done daily in every hospital in the country and results in live babies. The purpose of induced abortion is to produce a dead baby. No woman's health is improved by giving birth to a dead baby instead of a live one. If the pregnancy is endangering the mother, then deliver the baby and provide the care needed for the child to survive.
ReplyDeleteIn earlier trimesters, risks to the life of the mother are vanishingly rare. First Things has an excellent article in it's online archives concerning this. I believe it's named "The Medicalization of Abortion" and it was written by the then head of maternal fetal medicine at UCLA.
Hi Terentia ... I am so sorry that I implied Ebert's brief statement was intended to convey every truth about abortion in Catholic teachings.

Your desire to fully cover this issue with facts and "win." Mine is to appreciate an unexpected source of universal Truth made in a compelling way ... which I appreciated as a "witness" that would make someone stop and think.
If you are looking to quote journal posts for in-depth facts, give up now. That is completely missing the point. :-)
Julie, I am so sorry that my comment came across as wanting to "win" or implying that you missed or misrepresented anything. It truly was not my intent. I meant what I said about being glad to read of Mr. Ebert's prolife stance.
