What I Learned During My Time Off

It wasn't the blogging time that was distracting me nearly as much as the reading time. I dumped my RSS reader and went back to an old idea, using my blog roll.

It's been updated from the reader I was using and it is infinitely more restful to click through to the places I want to read and not feel the pressure of all the posts that have been collected for me to read.

Just thought I'd pass that along.

  1. ...everyone scrambles to see if they are on the Happy Catholic's blogroll...clouds in our coffee and all that...;-)

  2. Can't find my website on your Blog Roll.

    :(

Maybe, just maybe, Julie may be able to place my website under "Keeping Us Up to Date" for Big Pulpit?

  3. I love the serendipity of clicking down the blog roll without knowing what new posts I'll find, or how many of them. Reader is handy, but it takes a lot of the fun out if browsing around.

    1. Rather like browsing a bookstore. I hadn't thought of it that way! :-)

  4. I'm the opposite. I hate the wasting of time, clicking the blogroll to see if there's something new, and then you get there and you've already read the thing. I keep always-reads and If-I'm-brain-hungry reads in Google. I store on my blogroll a few extra places I go only for pure self-indulgence, so infrequently there's guaranteed to be new material.

Then again, I never feel compelled to read all the stuff in Reader. I also never feel compelled to read a whole newspaper or magazine, or even a whole book. Maybe there's a reason I relate best to 80-year-olds. They no doubt surpass certain other groups in don't-care-anymore.

    1. Hey Jen ... like you I rarely read all of any magazine or newspaper. I suppose I should've made the distinction that I actually never READ every single thing in Reader but I do check every headline ... and when you can have 300 of them a day pop up (and I have had) then just skimming headlines gets onerous. Sometimes I'd just hit delete but then what is the point of having Reader if not to even look at the headers?

This way I can check my blogroll only once a week if I feel like it (or the small group of blogs that I deem essential) and nothing is asking me to look at it ... ever. That is much less a waste of my time than checking Reader daily. :-)

Just a different way to exert my powers of discrimination. :-)

  5. Something to consider, as I attempt to skim through the 400 posts just in my reading folder of Google reader.
