Well Said: Authentic Charity vs. Sentimental Altruism

From Praying with St. Matthew's Gospel. As we struggle with how best to give alms sometimes ... to the beggar on the corner? ... to a charity? ... in a soup kitchen? ... this seems like a good guideline to keep in mind.
What distinguishes authentic charity from sentimental altruism? The answer is simple: God's goodness. How can we ensure that our choices follow the priorities of charity and not what we imagine to provide the most comfort to the neighbor? The answer again is clear: Choose the course of action that will ensure that the neighbor grows in his love for God. First, however, make sure that what you do also increases your own love for God and his Son, Jesus Christ.
