Well Said: Gangstas and Rosaries

From my quote journal.
... ladies and gentlemen — the gangstas are wearing rosaries. This has been denounced ... as an insult to the Holy Rosary, degrading it to the status of jewelry and gang culture. To the latter I respond, it's always been a symbol of gang culture. Just a really big gang. To the former, well maybe. But I am instantly reminded of the boast of St. Louis de Montfort, "Let me but place my Rosary around a sinner's neck ... and he will not escape me." ... wearing a rosary because it's cool — which it is — is no reverence to Our Lady, but she's not up in heaven angry that so mamny people are rocking her beads. She says, alright. I can work with this. And she will.

My brother's a cop. He says sometimes when he has a gang member with a rosary around his neck, he'll say to the guy, "So you love the rosary, huh? Pray it often? What's your favorite mystery? Can you say the Hail Mary?"

You know I feel the same as Marc. One of the priests at my church gave a homily a few months back on how he felt it superficial (perhaps even implying sacriligeous) that young people display what i'll call pop culture crosses for show. Well, what's the alternative, that they revel in satanic or witchcraft? It may not be ideal, but I do think it can be a heart changer for some later on.

I love it ! Whenever I see one of my students wearing some, I ask if they pray it often. They alsways say no (with a look that implies I've said something crazy) Undetered, I tell them I do, I can teach you if you like. And here's the miracle... sometimes to this they answer OK

You know...the 15 promises of Mary to Christians who recite the rosary. A heart that big can only be wrapping a string of love around a soul who needs Her special love. Somebody just forgot to put it on a nice little card that we use for a bookmark in our prayer books.

I'm with Philangelus and Anonymous. The fashion may well lead to something better.
