Stephen Sommers to Direct "Odd Thomas." NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

We remember Stephen Sommers don't we?

He began his career with The Mummy which was quite enjoyable and has slid steadily downhill ever since, winding up with a bump at G.I. Joe.

The guy whose personal quote is "Don't let them tell you less is more. More is more."

The director who Industrial Light & Magic created their own personal CGI demands scale for.

He'll be directing a movie about one of my favorite fictional characters of all time. And not only that ...
Looks like Stephen Sommers wrote the script himself, and is producing it as well.
This news just gets better and better, right?

(Thanks to Rose for the tip on this one.)

  1. Ugh. I'm pretty sure Odd Thomas would benefit from a fairly minimalist approach. Movie after movie has demonstrated that evil cannot be SHOWN with special effects, it needs to be intimated and felt with subtleties of scripting and acting. Bleah.

  2. Ugh indeed. I was disappointed to learn that the latest installments are graphic novels. I don't mind graphic novels, but I'm frankly more fond of the pictures in my head (not to mention the voices).

  3. What Michael Bay wasn't available.

Well I guess we can pray for a miracle that the director actually gets what made these books so unique and so good. Likely though they will play up the supernatural aspects and the Elvis portion will be nothing but comic.

  4. I wish M.Night Shyamala hadn't forgot how to direct. He would have been perfect as the director of Odd Thomas. He once was very good at deeper spiritual realities as in Signs.

    ODD THOMAS SPOILER ALERT:
Though Odd Thomas is too much like the Sixth Sense with the ending.

  5. Speaking of other bad ideas. Tom Cruise to possibly star in "At the Mountains of Madness."

  6. About M. Night ... I agree. Though I hadn't thought of Odd Thomas's connection with that spoiler moment you mention. True enough!

  7. Well, crap. That doesn't bode well for the movie now, does it? Hmph. I'll probably just avoid the movie and reread the books.
