Blogging Around: The "Review" Edition

Reviews of books and movies that you might find as interesting as I did.
  • The Night Life of the Gods by Thorne Smith, reviewed at Black Gate. I grew up laughing my head off working through my mother's collection of Thorne Smith's comedies set during Prohibition featuring put-upon men whose lives are changed by one chance encounter with a hard drinking, fast living woman.

  • Like Dandelion Dust, reviewed at Good News Film Reviews. What? A really good movie worth watching that is also a Christian movie? Quelle surprise!

  • Holy Ghosts by Gary Jansen, reviewed by The Curt Jester. I liked this book a lot. Here's a second opinion. Jeff Miller also likes it but takes the time to express a few niggling reservations, which I must admit had occurred to me ... though I didn't think them through as clearly.

  • Death Panels by Michelle Buckman, reviewed by The Curt Jester. A thriller set in 2042 whose first few pages, read via the publisher's email, had me interested enough to request a copy. It isn't here yet, but this review has me more impatient than ever.

  • The Great Purge ... it isn't a novel but The View from the Foothills' summary of books being summed up as they are sent on their way. Not necessarily bad, they just didn't hit Will the right way.

  • The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters, reviewed at All Manner of Thing. An interesting sounding ghost story which we are told is along the lines of The Turn of the Screw.

  • Revolutionary Road, reviewed at Good News Film Reviews by Lindsey Dunn whose reviews I will be looking for in the future if this one is any indication. The first three sentences say it all ... and the imagined dialogue of how this screenplay was sold to the studio is priceless.

3 brave one(s) among us:

I put Holy Ghosts on my Amazon wish list when you first mentioned it, and just ordered it this week. It arrived today and I'm half through it. While I'm not reading it as critically as you must for review purposes, I have to say I'm enjoying it.
Thanks for putting up book reviews and discussing both old and new books. It's helping to expand my literary world.
