My Name is Earl

Gun Store Owner: There's a three-day ID check on all guns.
Joy: Land of the free, my ass - what can I bring outta here today that gonna kill somebody?
Gun Store Owner: Anything in aisle seven.

Today's Horoscope*

Mars in your sun sign indicates that you will go to work, watch televised sports, and enjoy several meals this week.

This is a really great commentary. Healy combines a lot of the information that I have in a variety of other commentaries (both Catholic and Protestant), but then pulls it all together with additional observations that make it very accessib...

The Odyssey

I saw that Scott and Jesse (and others) will be discussing the Odyssey on SFFaudio sometime soon, a few books at a time. This piqued my interest and I began listening to the LibriVox free version. I have read the Odyssey before, though I wo...

The Engines of God
by Jack McDevitt
Picked up this review copy via SFFaudio. Looking forward to hearing the story, especially after reading Orson Scott Card's column containing a tribute to both the author and this series.

Couch Potato
(What we're watching)

* My Name is Earl (season 1): Surely everyone has heard of this series from some time ago. Lowlife Earl discovers karma when he is hit by a car right after buying the winning lottery ticket. He makes a list of every bad thing he's ever done and sets out to right those wrongs. Hilarious and heart-warming (but not in a sappy way). This is our evening half-hour before bed watching.

* The Guild (seasons 4 and 5): The web series chronicling the dysfunctional gamers of The Guild, written by and starring Felicia Day. You may have to actually love computer games to think this is funny ... or maybe not. It is hugely popular and gets better with each season. Season 5, which ended at a gamers convention, featured a number of celebrity walk-ons where the names were rarely, if ever, mentioned. We probably caught about half of them.

Where Am I the Rest of the Time?

Forgotten Classics
Let me read you a story on my podcast. Now alternating between: Bridge of Birds by Barry Hughart (a fantasy of China That Never Was) and Genesis, translation and commentary by Robert Alter. Both in copyright, both read by permission of the authors or their agents.

A Good Story is Hard to Find
Scott Danielson and I discuss books and movies that show themes of belief, faith, and that "one reality" under the surface. Yes, another podcast.

Meanwhile, Back in the Kitchen
My cooking blog. Not as active as it could be, but every so often I'll drop a recipe over there.

SFFaudio
I review science fiction and fantasy audiobooks for Scott and Jesse ... and occasionally am a guest on their podcast discussing the latest book in their "readalongs."

Happy Catholic's Bookshelf ... where my book stuff from all over the internet is gathered together for all to peruse. A little at a time anyway.

A Few Good Sources When Looking for Truth About the Media and the Pope

There are a lot of good sources out there, pointing out inaccuracies and misstatements by both the media and the Church, many Catholics never see them. Here are a few sources I trust to be even handed, honest, and unbiased.

My Conversion Story
