Blogging Around: The "What I Read Over the Weekend" Edition

For one thing I am now racing through Render Unto Caesar by Charles J. Chaput. Wow, it is fantastic and compelling and I can't believe it didn't get more attention during the election year last year. A full review will come later when I'm done.

At any rate, I took it easy this weekend with two whole days off of the computer altogether. So calming. However, right before that I found some standout blog posts.

Treasure Planet
A surprisingly indepth review of this Disney movie from a while back which also goes into more depth than one would expect in examining the state of animated children's movies at the time. It also mentions a couple of other good movies (Iron Giant, Titan A.E.). Yes, the writer is "our Rose" but I was surprised at the amount of information about about the movie's context in film history.

Rib Eye Steak, Onion, Bleu Cheese
The Anchoress has been cooking Pioneer Woman's recipes and graciously receiving much praise from her appreciative family. I enjoyed reading this true life recipe testing account as well as finding out that Pioneer Woman has a cookbook coming out. Mmmm!

A Beer Summit for Two Christians
The Paragraph Farmer has an evangelical friend and they've been indulging in a bit of "theology on tap" as it were. A really interesting read ... whether you're Catholic or evangelical you're going to learn something new. Or at least I did. If nothing else, the whole different use of vocabulary between two good Christians who view things from different religious mindsets is fascinating.

Eight Columbia Screwball Gems
Ok, this was from my morning WSJ reading, but these newly released "forgotten" movies sound wonderful to anyone who is a screwball comedy fan the way that I am. I have seen My Sister Eileen before and can attest to its greatness (of a hilarious sort, that is).

Why I Am Catholic
Don't stop at one post, read the whole blog. Ok, I haven't caught up with Webster Bull's most recent posts. However, from reading the lion's share I can tell you that it is a compelling witness of joyful Catholicism (I love that he calls Pope Benedict "my pope"). I was alerted to this passionate and excellent writer by The Anchoress and after reading a couple of posts, I copied and printed out all the others available at the time. Really good stuff. Go dip in and you'll see what I mean.
