Novena to St. Joseph

From way back in 2007. With all comments left attached from over the years. I'm praying this for someone close to me to find work. Thought I'd move it up to the front page for anyone else who might be interested.

O glorious Saint Joseph, faithful follower of Jesus Christ, to you we raise our hearts and hands to ask your powerful intercession in obtaining from the compassionate heart of Jesus all the helps and graces necessary for our spiritual and temporal welfare, particularly the grace of a happy death, and the special grace for which we now ask.

(Mention your request)

O guardian of the Word Incarnate, we feel animated with confidence that your prayers for us will be graciously heard at the throne of God.

(The following is to be said seven times in honor of the seven joys and seven sorrows of Saint Joseph:)

O glorious Saint Joseph, through the love you bear for Jesus Christ, and for the glory of hs name, hear our prayers and grant our petitions.

This novena can be practiced at any time of year. It is particularly effective if done for the seven Sundays prior to the feast of Saint Joseph in honor of his seven sorrows and seven joys. Say this novena nine days in a row.
I was asked if I knew a good novena for job seeking. I don't know a specific one but as Saint Joseph is the patron saint of, among other things, family protection, fathers, and work, this seemed appropriate. Also, I dig St. Joseph.

  9. I lost my job in February and have been looking hard for another ever since. I fear that my age may be a handicap. Anyhow, I went to St. Joseph High School and I'm putting my faith in him now ... Steve M.

  11. I ask for you intercession St. Joseph that God may grant my wish of approval for the permanent job that I am awaiting for. May the human resources at our company's head office will see the importance of my contribution to the company. This is important for me as my contract is ending and I am worried that I become unemployed. Dear God, please grant me your mercy. Thank you, Lord. Thank you, St. Joseph. Florence.

  16. I've been praying to St. Joseph for suitable, sustainable employment since converting (willingly loosing my Protestant pastor pay cheque) in August of 2005. It's been a long haul. I have had this bit and that bit and this contract and that one and some art sales but nothing sustainable or even that suitable (apart from the art would it take off). I've prayed the novenas and other prayers to St. Joseph. I don't doubt in his efficacy. I don't doubt God, not even when one loved one turned away from God and the Church because I continue to put my hope in God even though he seems to leave me hanging, again and again (they put it more harshly). One prayer that has meant more to me than any other is one St. Andre Bessette - that great promoter of St. Joseph and 'builder' of the Oratory near Montreal in St. Joseph's name runs something like this: O Good St. Joseph, pray for me as you would for yourself were you in my place with my needs and responsibilities and guide me in following your example as a faithful servant of God and a good husband, father and neighbor. - a slight adaptation on my part but in essence, that's it.

I put in another application on our the feast of Mary, Mother of God for yet another position. I interviewed for something in December and was not the candidate they were looking for. I see other converts convert and thrive, even become 'known' - this does not seem to be my path and must not be what is necessary for me to obtain the hope of heaven. So, I persist.

God bless you Julie, and the person close to you for whom you pray and God bless each of us who continue to seek in the hope of finding.

    1. I am very fond of St. Andre Bessette ever since visiting the St. Joseph Oratory in Montreal. It is truly a testament to faith. Thank you for sharing that prayer.

We are coming up on the beginning of the Seven Sundays of St. Joseph when we look at much more about that remarkable saint than whether we have a job or not. Owen, your story makes me think of when the Holy Family went to Egypt. I always think of St. Joseph's ready willingness to get up in the middle of the night right after that dream and pack up the family, of how he must have worked and worried and had to trust in order to provide for his family, of his quiet service, how we have no words of his left to us ... surely he is the one who understands your plight better than most. I will keep your job search in my prayers also ...

  17. Thanks Julie.
And I am happy you had a chance to visit the Oratory. It is remarkable in every way. I was there while on pilgrimage for the 49th IEC in Quebec City, 2008

    1. We were there in 2009 (if my calculations are correct). Several Japanese tourists have photos of Hannah going up the steps on her knees while praying. (I was not that dedicated.)
